Abstract :

European bison (Bison bonasus) is a protected wild animal living free in woodland regions of Eastern and Southern Poland. The largest population lives in the primeval Bia.owie.a forest in Poland and in Byelorussia (on the other side of the state border), the former belonging to the Bia.owie.a National Park (BNP), Poland. Using DNA samples of 22 animals randomly selected from BNP population, 14 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) were analysed. Moreover, short tandem repeats (STRs) and insertion/deletion (InDel) polymorphisms were analysed in the growth hormone receptor (GHR) and signal transducer and activator of transcription 5A (STAT5A) genes. The studied sample of the European bison population appeared mostly monomorphic at the loci analysed. However, variable sequences were found within the genes coding for ƒہ.lactoglobulin (LGB), GHR, estrogen receptor ƒ؟ (ERƒ؟), and STAT5A.
