Abstract :

Major depressive disorder. Bipolar disorder. Schizophrenia. Borderline personality disorder. Mental illness1 is a serious international health concern. As of 2012, an estimated 18.6 percent of American adults—that is, 43.7 million people—suffer from a mental disorder in any given year.2 The principal burden of mental illness is concentrated in those with serious mental illnesses. Serious mental illnesses include major depressive disorder, which touches roughly 6.9 percent of American adults (16 million people);3 bipolar disorder, which affects about 2.6 percent of American adults (6.1 million people);4 schizophrenia, which afflicts an estimated 1.1 percent of American adults (2.6 million people);5 and borderline personality disorder, which strikes an estimated 1.6 percent of American adults (3.75 million people).6 Twice as many live with schizophrenia as with HIV/AIDS.7
